Made In Chicago: Millenium Park Jazz Series

August 29, 2005

Orbert Davis' swinging Chicago Jazz Philharmonic showcased its repertory of original works, while celebrating the 40th anniversary of Chicago's pioneering Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) by premiering a new composition. Applying the collective creative process of 21st century jazz to 20th century classical music, Davis commissioned Nicole Mitchell, Ari Brown, Edward Wilkerson and Mwata Bowden to collaborate with him and the orchestra in creating movements for a new suite based on the works of Igor Stravinsky.

“'The pitch is much different. It’s more weighing on the social aspect of what we’re trying to do, rather than (only) the artistic quality.' At the very least, Chicagoans can look forward to hearing a unique American ensemble merging jazz, classical and music of far-flung immigrant cultures in a superb outdoor environment.”-Howard Reich
